  • Overview

    The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and the Data Analytics and Reporting department (DAR) at Lurie Children's Hospital is hiring a full time Senior Bioinformatician to develop, maintain, and innovate next generation sequence (NGS) software and pipelines. The Senior Bioinformatician is responsible for supporting the bioinformatics team in designing and building complex bioinformatics and lab informatics solutions related to clinical molecular pathology.


    The successful candidate will work on projects and implement systems under CLIA regulations and CAP guidelines. The ideal candidate has an advanced degree in a field related to computational biology with experience working with NGS. They are expected to have a disciplined approach to maintaining the highest standards of data validation and governance with faithful application of software development best practices.


    1. Develop, innovate and validate NGS algorithms, analytical solutions, and modules of bioinformatics pipelines for clinical NGS tests.
    2. Make recommendations to improve automation as well as design and deployment of interfaces and applications for improved NGS processing and workflows
    3. Implement DIY pipelines and software in the cloud computing environment
    4. Partners with the computing and bioinformatics team to test and validate new analytical tools and processes.
    5. Ensures compliance with CLIA/CAP requirements and adheres to HIPAA regulations for transactions, security and confidentiality.
    6. Maintaining documentation of procedures and process configurations
    7. Adheres to detailed work plans and timelines. Provides timely status reports.


    1. Master’s degree with at least three to five years of experience required, in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related field.  PhD preferred. Equivalent experience in computational biology will be considered in lieu of relevant degree.
    2. Minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on experience with analysis of NGS data is required (targeted sequencing, WES/WGS, RNASeq etc)
    3. Experience with open source bioinformatics and genome analysis tools
    4. Experience in Python, and demonstrated experience in other programming/scripting languages: R, Bash
    5. Experience with cloud computing is preferred.
    6. Experience in a CAP and/or CLIA laboratory is preferred.
    7. Strong verbal, written and graphic communications skills with the demonstrated ability to present complex technical concepts to varied audiences are required.
