  • Overview

    The Marketing Communications Specialist will oversee the development and execution of informative, illuminating and compelling communications materials that generate support for, raise awareness of, and drive referrals to Lurie Children’s Department of Surgery. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished writer with health/science writing experience, and the ability to identify, interpret and strategically communicate the institution’s clinical strengths and spectrum of research across multiple professional and consumer audiences.


    1. Work closely with the director and the divisions to develop and execute tailored marketing and communications strategies that support the strategic goals of the Department of Surgery and the hospital. Scope of work includes digital and print communications strategies and execution, media relations initiatives, web content development, video development, photo shoots, among other marketing communications needs.
    2. Researches, writes and edits patient stories, clinical brochures and related information that supports marketing outreach, raises awareness of the research and programmatic work done across the 10 surgery divisions and helps drive physician and patient referrals, further highlighting the Department of Surgery’s position as a regional and national leader in clinical innovation.
    3. Through one-on-one interviews with clinical and research faculty and administrators, identifies key patient stories, new program and team developments, the latest scientific and clinical innovations, and then targets communications to appropriate clinical and consumer/patient audiences.
    4. Attends strategy meetings, interviews clinical/administrative leaders and takes additional steps to gather information on emerging programs, issues and initiatives related to clinical care and research.
    5. Supports the design and execution of print materials for clinical and patient audiences.
    6. Coordinates web site information updates and revisions.
    7. Collaborates with Marketing, Public Affairs and Foundation Communications colleagues to develop consistent institutional messaging surrounding strategic clinical and research initiatives related to the Department of Surgery.
    8. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus on innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and services to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
    9. Other job functions as assigned.


    1. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or English.
    2. A minimum of 3-5 years writing and communications experience, preferably in academic medicine or the non-profit healthcare sector.
    3. Demonstrated ability to understand, narrate and contextualize complex clinical and scientific information in a compelling and accurate manner.
    4. Has broad understanding of and active interest in healthcare and medicine.
    5. Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects under demanding deadlines.
    6. Strong interpersonal communications skills (oral and written) and ability to work collaboratively across divisions.
    7. Strong focus on flexibility, ability to quickly adapt to unique challenges and respond appropriately.
    8. Experience using Microsoft Office suite of programs.
