  • Overview

    General Summary of Position Responsibility:      

    Plans and administers the ParentWise volunteer program for assigned area of service (e.g., Hematology/Oncology, Siragusa Transplant Center) at Lurie Children’s. Through volunteer coordination, complements existing supports that are already being provided by our medical teams as well as designs and implements new program enhancements.


    Essential Job Functions:

    Area Specific Job Accountabilities:

    1. Coordinates all aspects of ParentWise volunteer program. Works with appropriate team to develop and maintain family support programs. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary teams as an advocate and liaison for the families.  Facilitates communication between families and staff. 
    2. Develops criteria, recruitment sources and recruitment systems for volunteer involvement.
    3. Interviews and screens volunteer candidates. Coordinates volunteer training. Plans educational and support group in-services for volunteers.
    4. Establishes systems to support, monitor, and provide feedback regarding on-going volunteer interactions, as well as specifically coordinates matching of volunteers with appropriate patients and families considering compatibility, needs of the family, and staffing availability.
    5. Provides ongoing support and supervision of volunteers including but not limited to regular individual and group debriefings. Plans and implements volunteer recognition.
    6. Represents ParentWise program within and outside the organization in the form of public presentations, group facilitation, education presentations and workshops. Acts as a community liaison in support of marketing, public relations, and special events specific to the ParentWise program.
    7. Collaborates with Family Support staff and medical team in planning for, coordinating, and delivering appropriate services to families.
    8. Develops goals and objectives for the program and monitors/evaluates progress of these goals and objectives, as well as progress with the overall program. Develops budget and oversees funding for program. 
    9. Develops appropriate evaluation measures to effectively determine the effectiveness of the program.
    10. Develops, edits, and distributes parent journals and/or other new materials to families of appropriate patients.
    11. Collaborates with other non-patient organizations to enhance education of program and participate in the coordination of related special events.
    12. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    1. Education typically acquired through a completion of a master’s degree with a concentration in social work, psychology, child life, pastoral care, other family support backgrounds, or the social sciences. Knowledge of the health care environment and options for resources for parents and children. Strong interpersonal, critical thinking and assessment skills. 
    2. Demonstrated ability to work as part of multiple teams. Experience in facilitating groups, designing work plans, and program development.  Experience in public speaking and group presentations.
