  • Overview


    The Clinical Lab Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of procedures and services including point of service, minor point of care testing, specimen procurement and processing. Must be skilled in laboratory/hospital computer procedures and able to effectively communicate with all customers of the laboratory including patients and parents.  Functions as a member of the Processing team and actively supports the Hospital’s Continuous Quality and Customer Service goals through modeling appropriate behavior and providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals. 



    • Performs point of service functions. Greets patients/families in a friendly and courteous manner. Registers patient as a walk-in. Reviews registration information and directs patient to Central Registration to update any changes. Requests appropriate referral forms, makes copies of insurance cards, and captures or confirms consent of treatment and HIPAA information. Completes check-in procedure.
    • Verifies orders and diagnosis codes with the ordering physician as needed. Releases orders from EMR/ orders tests in LIS. Prints labels and forms.  Positively identifies the patient using two patient identifiers and affixes patient ID band. Schedules appointments in Cadence system. Completes checkout and end-of-session audits.
    • Performs minor POCT. Collects specimens by iontophoresis for sweat chloride testing. Performs maintenance procedures and function check on the equipment.
    • Identifies each patient using two patient identifiers prior to obtaining specimens and labels specimens appropriately.
    • Maintains telephone inquiries in a professional, proactive customer service fashion and serves as a resource for customer information and requests.
    • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
    • Utilizes the laboratory and hospital computer systems to order and receive laboratory specimens, report laboratory results to the physician and ancillary staff, retrieve collection lists, verify account numbers, modify incorrect orders.
    • Assist in the processing of laboratory specimens requiring centrifugation and /or aliquoting.
    • Maintains an appropriate inventory of phlebotomy supplies in the outpatient collection area and on the phlebotomy trays.
    • Keep refrigerators and freezers clean and organized. Bleaches bench tops and Centrifuges according to the departmental maintenance guidelines.
    • Supports new staff in orientation and training. Participates in continuing education and mandatory programs.  Successfully completes annual competency skill assessments.
    • Complies with safety, hazardous materials, standard precautions, and infection control policies.
    • Displays professional appearance. Promotes professional environment, including emphasis on cleanliness and safety.
    • Communicates any problems or deviations from established protocol to Med Tech Senior or Manager and documents in SERS.
    • Communicates effectively with patient, parents, physicians, ancillary hospital employees and team members.
    • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
    • Maybe expected to perform duties within any facility of the Children’s Hospital of Chicago Medical Center as needed.
    • Other duties as assigned



    • High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology preferred.
    • Formal training as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist preferred.
    • Prior experience working in a lab setting preferred.
    • Ability to resolve problems with the utilization of appropriate resources, to make informed decisions and handle complex inquiries in a courteous and timely manner; to work in a fast-paced, time critical department.
    • Strong verbal and written communicatin skills and demonstrated knowledge of Hospital and laboratory computer systems required.
