  • Overview

    Under the direction of the Medical Director and the appropriate Administrative Director, the Coordinator has the authority and accountability for facilitating the delivery of quality service in the laboratory.  The Coordinator is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory, oversees daily operations and may perform staff responsibilities.  Serves as a technical expert and resource person and provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership.

    Responsibilities

    • Develops and maintains a quality management system in accordance with the Lurie Children’s Hospital and Medical Center quality measurement and improvement plan.
    • Establishes and maintains data collection to monitor the quality of technical services.
    • Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to provide consultative, educational, technical and informational services as needed, to families, patients and staff.
    • Coordinates the performance and reporting of proficiency/competency testing and continuing. Coordinates and documents corrective action as necessary.
    • Completes mandatory and continuing education requirements as defined by the position. Develops, coordinates, assesses and documents competency testing.
    • Initiates and implements in the development of new procedures and protocols. Facilitates in the development and evaluation of new procedures and protocols.
    • Assists the Laboratory Medical and Administrative Director in coordinating the preparation, review, and revision of laboratory manuals.
    • Assists the Laboratory Medical and Administrative Director in maintaining fiscal responsibility relative to capital and operating budget, variance analysis, and trends in productivity, volume, acuity and service.
    • Assists the Laboratory Medical and Administrative Director with staff recruitment, job performance monitoring, evaluation and documentation in accordance with accreditation standards.
    • Assists the Laboratory Medical and Administrative Director in complying with governmental, accreditation, and Hospital standards, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA 88), HCFA, OSHA, and Joint Commission.
    • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others
    • Other job functions as assigned.

     

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree, or Masters preferred in a biological or medical science;
    • Five years minimum laboratory experience. MT (ASCP) or equivalent clinical and professional expertise in the appropriate discipline. 
    • Ability to problem solve and appropriately confront and resolve issues.
    • Excellent communication skills required.
