    General Summary of Position Responsibility:      

     

    The Student Nurse Assistant (S.N.A.) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse to provide care for patients/families with acute and chronic diseases, disorders found in the pediatric and adolescent into the young adult populations. Actively supports the Hospital’s and the department’s quality goals and service excellence principles.

     

     

    Essential Job Functions:

     

    Area Specific Job Accountabilities:

     

    1. Provides direct patient care assistance under the direction of an RN including vital signs, emptying fluid collection containers, point of care testing/controls glucose, hemocult, urine dipstick, hemoglobin A1C, HCG testing, PO feeding, bulb suctioning, holding patients, providing comfort measures and distraction techniques, changing diapers, assisting with ADLs, and recording intake and output.
    2. Serves as a patient sitter as necessary.
    3. Orients families to the unit, room, Get Well Network, and Nurse Call after admission.
    4. Documents patient data per department standards in the patient’s medical record.
    5. Transports patients to and from other units or testing areas as necessary.
    6. Escorts patients out of the hospital at discharge in collaboration with Volunteer Services.
    7. Manages the stocking and maintenance of patient rooms including, but not limited to the following: replacing canisters, returning clean unused supplies from patient room and treatment room and places in bin in clean utility room, stocking bedside cabinets, and maintaining standard room set-up and proper functioning of items in room.
    8. Update staff photo cards at bedside.
    9. Keeps the patient room clean and orderly by cleaning patient care equipment as well as computers inside occupied patient rooms as well as removing unused patient care equipment and placing it in the soiled utility room.    
    10. Dispose of bodily fluids and medications/IV fluids at discharge. Ensures no patient health information is left in the room.
    11. Assists with sending labs after RN has ensured the specimens are properly labeled.
    12. Provides coverage to the Unit Secretary as needed (covers front desk, answers phones, covers for lunch, etc.)
    13. Assists with inpatient paperwork including collecting paperwork, printing labels, ensuring correct labels & barcodes are attached to documents, creating copies, scanning documents, and assisting with MyChart access.
    14. Successfully completes full report to the Certified Nursing Assistant replacing them at end of shift.
    15. Sets up rooms for new admissions/transfers.
    16. Sets up and maintains emergency standby equipment at patient bedside and/or designated areas.
    17. Reconciles patient information in Central Supply System (PYXIS)
    18. Assists in the retrieval and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical products that are dispensed from the Pharmacy to the appropriate patient care provider’s (from tube system).

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

    1. Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s Nursing Program (or higher) required.
    2. Completion of Nursing fundamentals course and first clinical rotation required.
    3. Must currently be in and maintain good academic standing in program.
    4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    5. Must be able to safely immobilize children, if necessary, and be able to move equipment and patients; respond quickly to patient care situations; effectively communicate with patients/families, physicians, and patient care staff, and meet professional image and communication standards.
    6. Bilingual ability preferred.
