  • Overview

    This is a Research Associate II position. BA/BS or MS in Biology or in Science Education. This position is a combination of support for the educational outreach program (InSciEd Out, www.insciedout.org) and participation in the research activities at SMCRI. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the ability to communicate effectively with students (K-12 through graduate school) and educators (K-12 through University). Outstanding organizational skills, including time management and the capacity to multitask and prioritize. In addition, the ability to design and execute experiments, analyze, compile records and present data, contribute to manuscript and grant submissions. Maintaining cleanliness and safety of laboratory area. Maintaining stocks of solutions, monitoring and ordering laboratory supplies. Strict adherence to research protocols required. Assisting with training and mentoring of students.


    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Advise on and support implementation of curriculum products from summer teaching trainings into partner K-12 schools.
    2. Coordinate directly with principals and teachers to fulfill the needs of schools.
    3. Facilitate InSciEd Out training for K-12 teachers during summer months to prepare current and future partner schools for InSciEd Out for curriculum integration.
    4. Acquire understanding of the zebrafish model system to be able to act as a liaison between the scientific and education community.
    5. Work with postdoctoral, graduate, and community volunteers to support classroom needs.
    6. Manage the online portal of curricular products, ensuring that all materials are available and accessible for Chicago hub teachers.
    7. Work with Operations Specialist to review and improve InSciEd Out Curriculum with a focus on the K-12 units.
    8. Be involved in the research activity at Topczewski laboratory at SMCRI, to understand the scientific process and application of zebrafish model in human health related studied.



    1. A level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree or MS in biological sciences. An understanding of the scientific method is required. A laboratory experience strongly preferred.
    2. A working knowledge of computers is required.
    3. Possess an excellent command of the English language.
    4. Highly interested in biology, biological research, and education.
    5. Demonstrates competency in mentoring/teaching with an understanding of experiential learning.
    6. Training and practice in qualitative research methods (i.e. focus groups, interviews, survey design).
    7. Development and implementation of novel student metrics.
    8. Expertise in community-¬engaged research methodology, particularly demonstrating experience working with minority and/or underserved populations

    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Expertise with using zebrafish a model organism
    2. PreK-12 professional teaching experience
    3. Evidence of collaborative work involving other institutions and commercial partners.
    4. Grounding in education and health behavior theories.
    5. Ability to orchestrate and lead team members in specific discussion formats (Courageous Conversations, Difficult Dialogue, etc.)
    6. Understanding and skill in IRB guidelines and study approval relating to human subject studies with a critical focus on principles and practices of pediatric research
    7. Experience in clinical trial design and implementation
