  • Overview

    Works with multidisciplinary clinical team to provide evidence based patient care and patient/family education.  Manages the daily operations of the area and serves as the liaison for various inter and intra departmental personnel matters.  Provides support to the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) and Physician Assistant (PA)  promoting the advancement of the nursing profession.  Provides staff development opportunities for APN staff; evaluates individual performance planning and improvement.

     

     

    Responsibilities

    1. Collaboratively leads clinical operations and provides administrative and clinical leadership to provide expert care in the assigned Department(s).
    2. Works with Advanced Practice, (primary nursing and ancillary) nursing staff to plan and provide essential coverage for daily operations. Ensures for the provision of efficient and effective high quality patient care in the department(s) of responsibility.
    3. Responsible for APN (nursing and ancillary staff) performance planning and improvement process.
    4. Facilitates and coordinates the development of department protocols/policies and guidelines for the continuity of care amongst the specialty areas.
    5. Facilitates a consistent orientation process and documentation of achievements amongst new hires and experienced staff.
    6. Promotes the advancement of the nursing profession both locally and nationally, which may include publication, participation in professional organizations, obtaining certification is specialty area and supporting the education and staff development of the nursing staff.
    7. In collaboration with the Director, prepares budget, monitors variance monthly, and takes action to correct and/or make recommendations for budget adjustments based on analyzed data and change in practice or trends.
    8. Participates in research design, implementation and interpretation.
    9. Meets the Medical Staff’s Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism and system based practice.
    10. Facilitates meeting regulatory requirements and accreditation standards to ensure compliance with federal, state, local law and accreditation requirements (e.g. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), IL Department of Public Health Hospital Licensing Act (IDPH), Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Joint Commission (TJC).
    11. Ensures that all external licensure and accreditation standards are met in accordance with the requirements and reporting standards for all Federal, State, Local and other regulatory agencies.
    12. Ensures that evidence-based professional standards of practice are developed, understood, implemented and evaluated.
    13. Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic test and procedures.
    14. Prescribes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.

    Qualifications

    1. Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing; APN required, NP certification required.
    2. Three to five years of related clinical experience.
    3. Licensure to practice in the State of Illinois required.
    4. Working knowledge of current AAP guidelines for preventive care of children.
    5. Strong communication skills in order to address patients/families, physicians and hospital staff.
    6. Strong orgianizational and problem solving skills to manage complex processes and relationships in an evolving role while working with a diverse workforce.
    7. Ability to advance knowledge base through self-directing learning to maintain competency in the leadership role.
    8. Demonstrates leadership skills by assisting and encouraging the team to participate in identification of problems, formulation of plans, and initiation of corrective measures and follow-up to make certain suitable action is taken.
    9. Demonstrates the ability to mentor team members, translate concepts into actions and understands how to get work done within organizations.
    10. Promotes a positive work environment and demonstreates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgement and reasoning skills.
    11. Collaborates with other APN managers and APN administrator in the dissemination of information and development of processes to further promote APN practice.
    12. Knowledge of regulatory compliance expectations and standards.
