  • Overview

    This position provides genetic counseling to patients and families as directed. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients in regards to their growth and development process. 

    Responsibilities

    1. Coordinates scheduling, review of medical records and other data, counseling, follow-up testing, and communication with referring physicians for patients seen through the various clinical programs within designated area of responsibility.
    2.  Serves as the liaison between specialty services involved in the care of children with genetic disorders and designated area of responsibility.
    3. Develops outreach programs (within our own Hospital clinics) in collaboration with specialty clinic directors, to reach the families of children with genetic disorders, and to offer genetic services within those specialty clinics (when possible) or insure appropriate referral.
    4. Works with clinical geneticists in various advocacy programs.
    5. Communicates laboratory results to referring physicians (e.g., in the case of a chromosome abnormality) and arranges family studies and genetic counseling when indicated.
    6. Handles telephone requests for information about genetic services, genetic diseases, support groups, etc.
    7. Oversees genetic counseling students during their rotations at Lurie Children’s, and works with medical students, residents, and fellows rotating through the division.
    8. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality of care and service to our patients, families’ co-workers and others.
    9. Documents in the Electronic Medical Record and/or paper chart.

    Qualifications

    1. Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling required.

     

    Current licensure as a Genetic Counselor in the State of Illinois required.
