  • Overview

    The Research Pharmacist coordinates the research activities of the Pharmacy Department.  Educates pharmacy, nursing and medical staff and other health care professionals on investigational drugs with emphasis on pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicities.

     

    Actively supports the hospital's and department's continuous quality improvement and customer service goals individually and as an effective team member.

    Responsibilities

    1. Reviews research protocols and advises principal investigators if necessary.
    2. Develops procedures on the dispensing and record maintenance of study drugs.
    3. Educates pharmacy staff on research protocols, dispensing procedures and pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicities of investigational drugs.
    4. Manages inventory of the study drugs and maintains appropriate regulatory records.
    5. Provides drug information to physicians, nurses, patients and parents.
    6. Compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals used in research protocols.
    7. Assists the medical, pharmacy and nursing staff in the development of research protocols.
    8. Serves on the Institutional Review Board.
    9. Works as a team with other members of the hospital.
    10. Supervises and coordinates activities of the research technician.
    11. Performs necessary duties to ensure efficient functioning, e.g. works extra and odd shifts, maintains physical appearance of the pharmacy department, and orients new personnel.

    Qualifications

    1. Graduate from an American Council of Pharmaceutical Education accredited College of Pharmacy. Licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Illinois.
    2. One year of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
    3. Makes independent decisions within the purview of professional prerogatives.
    4. Is knowledgeable and current in all phases of pharmacy practice. Is familiar with medical and nursing practices and concepts of proper patient care.
    5. Practices good personal and human relation skills using tact, courtesy and firmness at all times.
    6. Develops good working relations with other hospital employees and creates a favorable image of Lurie Children’s in the eyes of patients, visitors and the general public.
    7. Must have data entry skills or ability to learn computer data entry.
    8. Must have good communication skills.
    9. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
    10. Physical Demands: Must be able to differentiate colors
