  • Overview

    The Spina Bifida Liaison assists in coordinating the related activities of the Divisions of the Neurosurgery, Neurology, Urology, Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Social Work teams that service the Spina Bifida patients within the medical center.  Performs a variety of duties including clerical, secretarial, administrative, communication, and data management to assist the Spina Bifida Coordinator in the organization of the Spina Bifida program.



    1. Responds and corresponds to daily incoming and outgoing telecommunications.  Obtains and enters patient demographics and financial information.  Maintains database, scheduling, and tracking of all patient activities.
    2. Schedules physician appointments in coordination with ancillary appointments amongst the team in relation to the appropriate visit or treatment plan. Investigates failed appointments with Point-of-Service Representative and contacts patient to reschedule visits in accordance with treatment plan.
    3. Tracks patient treatment plans and coordinates needed appointments with team physicians and nurses. 
    4. Performs database entry and report preparation to provide outcomes, research, and education. 
    5. Completes agenda, minutes, letters, correspondence, and transcriptions from physician dictation and distributes to team, referring, and primary physicians.  
    6. Assists Coordinator in revising and updating patient information handouts. 
    7. Completes, maintains, and logs Spina Bifida team meeting minutes. 
    8. Assists in the coordination and organization of Spina Bifida meetings, retreats, and annual symposiums. 
    9. Maintains inventory of supplies. Logs and records transactions. 
    10. Assists the Coordinator and the Spina Bifida team in developing, implementing, and evaluating changes to improve and enhance the efficient process of all services provided. 
    11. Cross trains in the Division of Neurosurgery and assists when needed.


    1. High school diploma or equivalent with excellent communications skills. Some college coursework preferred.  
    2. Minimum three years experience in a secretarial role with healthcare experience preferred. Ability to operate a personal computer and standard office equipment, such as photocopy machine, facsimile machine, calculator, etc.. Experience working in a Microsoft Windows environment with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Typing skills of 55 to 60 words per minute.
    3. Effective and strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, verbal and in writing.  
    4. Ability to follow verbal and written directives with detail. 
    5. Ability to work independently and exercise good and professional judgment. 
    6. Computer skills and competency in all Microsoft applications and hospital computer systems. 
    7. Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage deadlines. 
    8. Strong planning and coordination skills. 
    9. Knowledge of medical terminology. 
    10. Ability to accurately proofread. 
    11. Bilingual skills preferred.
