  • Overview


    Facilitates, promotes and models a leadership philosophy and style consistent with the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago leadership statement. In collaboration with medical and organizational leadership, provides oversight in planning, organizing, and directing the management activities that support the clinical operations of the Genomics, Mass Spec and Immunology laboratory sections, including fiscal responsibility.  Initiates process and system improvement activities.  Provides direction to management to accomplish department goals and meet customer needs. 


    Responsible for the oversight of the daily operations of the Genomics laboratory sections. Serves as a technical expert and resource person and provides a timely communication link between staff and leadership.


    Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care, the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients with regard to their growth and development process.



    1. Facilitates and leads assigned group functions. Provides leadership for designated teams in pathology and laboratory medicine services.
    2. Accountable for the achievement of the strategic outcomes for areas of responsibility.
    3. Demonstrates critical thinking and expert decision-making.
    4. Participates in the operational process: develops annual objectives, within the scope of Lurie Children’s strategic plan, assuring integration across clusters.
    5. Manages and coordinates the effective / efficient use of human and material resources within the Genomics sections. Provides direct supervision for department-specific laboratory staff. Ensures proper staffing in order to meet workload demands, maximize productivity and provide highest quality testing within appropriate turnaround times that meet or exceed customers’ customer satisfaction. Provides technical support as needed.
    6. Assures compliance with Federal and state regulatory agencies and certifying organizations, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA 88), CMS, OSHA, and The Joint Commission.
    7. Accountable for financial management within areas of responsibility. Prepares operational and capital budgets. Monitors budgets and takes corrective action as needed. Maintains fiscal responsibility relative to capital and operating budget, variance analysis, and trends in productivity, volume, acuity and service.
    8. Identifies opportunities for, and develops interdependent teams, works in cooperation with physician and organizational leadership to identify and address issues.
    9. Investigates and provides timely responses to complaints about the Lab services.
    10. Facilitates collaborative partnerships with physicians to ensure the needs of patients are met.
    11. Models, promotes and monitors department’s sensitivity to customer needs.



    1. Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in genomics or a related clinical technology field required. 5 years minimum laboratory experience with high complexity testing.
    2. Proven leadership qualities with at least 3 years of supervisory experience. Knowledge and experience of clinical laboratory operations, health care administration, and finance, as typically acquired through three to five years of progressive experience, required.
    3. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Ability to work well in a team environment and with different personalities and educational levels.
    4. Ability to teach and develop communication vehicles. Able to handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously and without constant direction.
