  • Overview

    General Summary of Position Responsibility:          

    Under the direction of a Registered Nurse this position cares for patients from infancy to adolescence and for young adults with chronic medical conditions


    Essential Job Functions:

    1.  Assists with the following tasks under the direction of an RN: Orienting families to the unit/hospital, Vital signs measurement per unit policy, Ambulating patient, Patient positioning, Cleaning/preparing exam rooms between patients, Documentation of patient data per unit policy either on paper record or in EMR, Emptying fluid collection containers as specified in unit policy,
    2. Weighing patients and documenting accurately on growth charts based on clinic, Measuring length/height of patients and documenting accurately based on clinic, Urine/nasogastric drainage testing, Glucose testing, Hemocult testing, Hemacue, Bulb suctioning, Oral suctioning with yankauer, Assisting with procedures, Assisting with intra hospital transport, Holding patients, Providing comfort measures, Maintain clinic flow, Communicate with patients both in waiting area and in rooms regarding timeliness of visit.  
    3. Stocking and maintenance: Changing needle boxes when 2/3 full, Distributing linen for exam rooms, Maintain exam room supplies, Breaking down rooms after discharge, Replacing canisters, oxygen tubing, and nebulizers per protocol, Obtaining unit supplies.
    4. Entering orders for lab, Answering phones, Assisting with sending labs, Phone calling/paging as directed, Coverage for clerk, Utilizing patient pagers.
    5. Keeping unit orderly, Cleaning equipment and toys, Checking and recording refrigerator temperatures, Checks AED’s or Crash carts in assigned locations.
    6. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    1. High school diploma/GED required.  Certified Nursing Assistant or enrollment in a nursing program with completion of a nursing fundamentals course. 
    2. Must be able to safely immobilize children if necessary and be able to move equipment and patients.  Must be able to respond quickly to patient care situations. 
    3. Must be able to effectively communicate with patients/families, physicians, and patient care staff, and meet professional image and communication standards.
    4. Able to demonstrate initiative in problem solving.
    5. Some computer skills required.
    6. Bilingual ability preferred.
