Overview

In close collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and Medical Director(s), Center for Quality and Safety, develops, implements, and leads Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago’s Center for Quality and Safety, including the Center’s Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, Evidence-Informed Practice, Clinical Informatics, and Clinical Decision Support (CDS) programs. Works in close collaboration with medical staff and hospital leaders, Legal and Risk Management, Information Management, and Data Analytics and Reporting to foster improvements in care through quality improvement and safety, evidence-informed practice, utilization of the electronic health record (EHR) and clinical analytics. Shows expertise in the use of formal quality improvement methodologies and technology to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of care delivery processes and outcomes, and the use of data to drive improvement. Demonstrates expertise to improving the safe delivery of care, through the elimination of serious patient harm, identification, analysis, and mitigation of medical errors, and incorporating elements of high reliability organization theory and safety culture into the design of health care delivery systems. Demonstrates and shows commitment to consistently learning from all available evidence and data to provide high quality, safe and efficient care as a health learning system and high reliability organization. Provides leadership to marshal resources and guide successful implementation of improvements in clinical information systems to support improved clinical outcomes. Understands patient care, human factors and improvement methodologies, and is responsible for strategies that result in the effective design, development, and implementation of CDS.

Responsibilities

  1. Establishes a framework and has oversight for the Center for Quality and Safety at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, including prioritization and program design.
  2. Establishes departmental strategic plan. Aligns department strategic priorities with Vision 2025 goals and tactics.
  3. Evaluates needs, plans, designs, and educates users, as well as measures and monitors the adoption of CCGs, order sets and other EIP tools in both the inpatient setting and across the continuum of care. Works with operational and physician leaders to increase adoption when necessary.
  4. Coordinates with department and division leaders, as well as other clinical leaders to eliminate all serious patient harm and drive the incorporation of high reliability organization principles to the design of the health care delivery system.
  5. Coordinates with department and division physician leaders as well as other clinical leaders to identify opportunities to decrease unwarranted variation in clinical care, improve clinical outcomes, and improve clinical documentation effectiveness and efficiency.
  6. Analyzes internal quality data, as well as external comparative data (PHIS, HEDIS, peers) to identify trends and opportunities for improvement in clinical care.
  7. Collaborates with clinical informatics and the data analytics leaders, using available informatics tools and reports / dashboards to implement consistent, effective and efficient use of tools designed to decrease clinical practice variation. Ensures feedback is routinely shared with clinical stakeholders.
  8. Collaborates with Risk Management on the proactive identification, analysis, and mitigation of errors.
  9. Collaborates with Accreditation Readiness and Patient and Family Experience leadership regarding externally-required system-wide quality measurement reporting (e.g. Joint Commission Oryx, HEDIS, CHIPRA, USNWR outcome measures) as required by government and regulatory agencies and increasingly for Pay for Performance.
  10. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
  11. Advances Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s goal to exceed national standards for clinical outcomes. Serves as an expert in clinical analytics, the use of data captured in care delivery to inform and improve clinical practice and outcomes.
  12. The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.
  13. Other job functions as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree required. Clinical degree (Bachelor’s degree of Nursing or Pharmacy) preferred.
  2. Minimum 5 years direct managerial experience, preferably at the Senior Director level.
  3. Excellent project management and business analysis skills. Experience with improvement methodologies, e.g. DMAIC, PDSA, Lean, Six Sigma, IHI Model for Improvement etc. required.
  4. Strong written, interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills.
  5. Proficiency in presenting, communicating, and interacting effectively with medical staff and management at all levels of the organization.
  6. Working knowledge of healthcare reform, quality, patient safety and regulatory / compliance issues affecting healthcare at a national and local level.
  7. Proficiency with Microsoft applications: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  8. Familiarity with data management including interpreting, comprehending, and summarizing statistical and medical data.
  9. Project management and collaboration skills required.
