Overview

This position will manage all billing, coding, and compliance functions for PFF and LCMG physicians. This person will seek ways to improve revenue cycle outcomes and processes across Childrens Hospital of Chicago Medical Center. Working with the Administrators of Physician Revenue Cycle Revenue Cycle and with the Directors of Hospital Billing and Admitting Services, this person will provide strategic direction and management of the implementation of new physician and hospital billing systems. This person will have dotted line reporting to each PFF and CMMG physician group leader.

Responsibilities

  • Maximize the efficiency of billing processes for Childrens Hospital of Chicago Medical Centers physician groups; review and interpret operational data to assess need for procedural revisions and enhancements; review and approve all physician billing and collections policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Monitor performance within physician billing, coding, and collections functions and address any issues to ensure that the activities of the billing operations are in compliance with all regulatory guidelines and requirements.
  • Manage billing vendors and analyze performance trends impacting charges, coding, collection and accounts receivable. Take appropriate action to realign external billing vendors and internal billing and coding teams.
  • Manage department business managers on a day-to-day basis.
  • Provide education, expert guidance, and support to Lurie Childrens physicians and staff on billing and coding regulations and guidelines.
  • Oversee a comprehensive audit program to evaluate documentation, coding and charge entry accuracy.
  • Ensure that billing and collections functions are directionally aligned with overall service principles and leadership accountabilities.
  • Works with internal departments that directly affect the physician revenue cycle, such as Registration and Faculty Practice Plan, to ensure an efficient Revenue Cycle.
  • In collaboration with Information Management (IM), sets priorities for the Epic Resolute Professional Billing application analysts. Leads process improvement teams as needed.
  • Provide input on strategy, planning, and implementation of new operations and systems.
  • The authority to hire, separate, promote, demote, write and administer performance evaluations.
  • Other job functions as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required. MBA or MHA or other related advanced coursework or certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of healthcare business office experience, to include at least three years of responsibility for physician billing, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Must be able to make administrative and procedural decisions, to develop, plan, and implement short-and long-range goals, to communicate effectively with medical and administrative staff, to analyze procedures and processes.
  • Must thoroughly understand billing cycle from point of service through collections and be familiar with the interface of clinical operations to the billing functions in a group practice setting.
  • Must have working knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 coding principles, and understand and remain current with contemporary coding and billing regulations and compliance requirements. Must be a strong team player, able to work effectively with direct and indirect reporting relationships.
  • Strong oral and writing communications skills.
